Suggest Improvement

Uses Appinio AI to suggest an improved version of your question. You can accept or reject the suggestion. If accepted, the question is updated immediately.

Add Image

Lets you attach a visual to your question. Images must be in .jpg or .png format and no larger than 1.5MB. For the best display experience, use square images to avoid respondents having to scroll or zoom.

Add Instructions

Lets you include guidance that will be shown to respondents before they answer the question.

Switch Question Type

Lets you change the question type, for example from Single Choice to Likert Scale, without losing the content you have already entered.

Move to Position

Lets you move the question to a specific position in the survey without having to drag it manually. This is particularly useful in long questionnaires.

Duplicate

Creates an exact copy of the question, which you can then edit independently.

Open Simulator

Opens a mobile preview showing how this specific question will appear to respondents in the Appinio app.

Add Comment

Opens the comment panel at the question level, allowing you to leave feedback or flag something for a teammate or your research consultant.

Number of Answer Options

The number of answers you can add depends on the question type. For Single and Multiple Choice questions, you can create up to 26 answer options.

Multiple Answers

By default, respondents can only select one answer. To allow multiple selections, check the "Multiple Answers Possible" box. Once enabled, you can optionally set a minimum and/or maximum number of answers a respondent must select.

Exclusive Answers

When multiple answers are enabled, an exclusive answer option becomes available for individual answer choices. When a respondent selects an exclusive answer, they cannot select any other option. This is typically used for answers such as "None of the above."

Randomization

Check the "Activate Randomization" toggle at the bottom of the question to display answer options in a random order for each respondent. This helps reduce sequencing bias in your results.

Jump to End and Screenout

Each individual answer option has two additional routing options accessible from the answer settings.

  • Jump to End automatically skips the respondent to the end of the survey if they select that answer. This is useful when a certain response indicates that no further questions are relevant for that respondent.
  • Screenout removes the respondent from the survey entirely if they select that answer. This is used to disqualify respondents who do not meet your target criteria mid-survey, for example if they indicate they do not use the product category you are researching.

Generating Questions with AI

At any point during survey creation, you can click "Generate Question" to have Appinio AI suggest additional questions based on the content of your survey so far. This is useful when you want to make sure you are covering all relevant angles of your research topic.

Saving a question

If you use certain questions repeatedly across surveys, you can save them to your library for easy reuse. Hover over the question you want to save and check the checkbox that appears on the left-hand side. A menu bar will appear at the top of the screen. Click the ribbon icon labeled "Save to Library" to save the question. Saved questions can be retrieved at any time from the "Saved" tab when adding a new question to a survey.
